Derived from the ancient Asian form of torture, “Lingchi,” A Thousand Cuts is a photographic study of patterns of domestic abuse in the South Asian community. This metaphor highlights the cyclical nature of abuse, where each act chips away at the soul of the survivor.
Spread across an exhibit, workshop, and discussions, this project by Sujata Setia attempts to move outward from her social context to investigate the politics of abuse and coercive control.
Introduction and Grounding: The workshop begins by introducing the theme, "A Thousand Cuts," and its connection to the exhibition. Participants engage in a brief grounding exercise to help relax and focus. This includes deep breathing, visualization, and revisiting personal memories through shared dialogues.
Self-Portrait Creation: (I see ‘me’) Participants receive paper, pencils, markers, colors, paints, and mirrors. They are encouraged to look at themselves in the mirror, acknowledge their reflection, and create a representation of themselves on paper. This can be abstract or literal, with no wrong interpretations. Participants take their time to express themselves freely.
Cutting and Healing: After completing their portraits, participants cut their artwork, symbolizing emotional wounds or challenges. They are encouraged to be bold and expressive in their cuts. Colored paper is then placed under the artwork, with each color representing memories or feelings of security, love, and belonging. This symbolizes healing and recovery.
Sharing and Discussion: Participants share their artwork and reflect on the emotions they experienced during the process.
A Thousand Cuts by Sujata Setia from October 16 to 19.
