TINKERING WORKSHOP
The intent of this effort is to encourage children to work with their hands and build something
that excites them in a space that is largely informal. Children work along with facilitators and
learn concepts and skills in small increments through experiences.
To keep the spirit of tinkering alive in us, one must make sure that there is a space where one is
not subjected to the idea of a perfect product. The joy and the learning comes from the process
of working with one's hands and forming logical thinking processes. Only after much experience
with tinkering which ideally begins during childhood, can one start thinking of products that
complete in every way.
We plan to provide a space where individuals have access to different hand tools (graduating to
power tools) and materials ranging from plastics to metals and everything in between. There will
also be exposure to electronics; understanding and creating simple circuits.
Use of commonly available materials wherever possible and one's own approach in building
whatever one intends to build is encouraged.
When one works with hands and understanding the way gadgets work, one takes small steps
into the larger world of a packaged product and one goes back home feeling a little smarter and
a little more confident in tinkering around.
BUILDING A LIGHT SABER!
For an introduction to tinkering around, there will be a 2 hour session where you will use
different hand tools to build a light saber.
One will experience measuring, drilling into and cutting plastics and assembling it along with
pre-made electronics to make a fully working light saber!
The Makerspace@Koota is facilitated by Krishna Somashekar, an industrial designer with 20 years of experience. He has been interested in working with children and getting them to work with their hands.
Exploring different products that can be made with simple everyday objects
Should one enroll into the programme, individuals will be encouraged to come up with their own
products and ideas on how to make them.
Depending on the response and need; the space to build will be provided either
Twice a week for 2 Hours per session and /or two Saturdays a month at 8hrs per session
