‘Canadian Vistas’ is an exhibition of thirteen mixed-media paintings bringing glimpses of Canada to India. It is a sequel to the ‘Canadian Landscapes’ exhibition at the Kalaneri Art Gallery, Jaipur, India in 2019.
Canada has vast, pristine, uninhabited land. Three oceans surround it along with mountain ranges, cascading waterfalls, rivers meandering through the valleys, rugged coastline, beautiful beaches, the Bay of Fundy with the highest tides in the world and much more. The paintings present Canada as a land of four seasons – much like a reflection on the four seasons of life, with every season having its charm.
Mother Nature changes its cloak in every season. Beautiful, lush greenery in the summer and long warm sunny days make the place feel tropical. They beckon youngsters to make sandcastles, float their sailboats and go on an ‘imaginary voyage’. Each summer thousands of Sandpiper birds come from the Arctic to the Bay of Fundy to make a pit stop. They rest at Johnson’s Mills for three weeks and double their body weight to prepare for a 72-hour non-stop flight to South America. This is ‘preparation’ of the highest order!
The splendour of vibrant colours in the autumn is breathtakingly beautiful. The leaves of deciduous trees change colours as the nights get cooler. Maple trees look magnificent. Rich colours of green, yellow, orange, and red make the whole hillside come alive in eye-catching beauty. All this beauty is soon replaced with shorter days and cold frigid nights. Geese fly south in a ‘V’ formation, presenting an excellent example of leadership and ‘collaboration’.
The arrival of winter brings a new cloak for Mother Nature. Mountains and hillsides covered in snow and frosty boughs of evergreen trees add to the ‘pristine’ beauty of the landscape. Spring is the time of ‘transformation’ and regeneration. Melting snow and cascading waterfalls bring the promise of warmer and longer days. The greenery begins to emerge, the crocuses and daffodils poke their heads out of the ground and the birds entertain the spectators with their unique ballet.
The artist has attempted to present a glimpse of the natural beauty of Canada to the viewers, with the hope that the spectators will look beyond the textures and colours to make an emotional connection with the natural beauty of Canadian vistas.
