CHHAAPA KATA (Heads or Tails)

In the seemingly serene city of Nasik, the thirty three year old Maitreyi and her mother Uttara are engaged in an eternal tug of war. When Maitreyi stumbles upon Aseem, a young teacher from a boarding school in Uttarkashi, she does not expect to fall so hopelessly in love. For the first time, Maitreyi sees the possibility of escape while Uttara fights tooth and nail to maintain the status quo. Chhaapa Kata is the story of a capricious mother and a contentious daughter who want to avoid the past but are unable to see a future to embrace.

Hear, Here is back with 4 more plays to be read, heard and savoured. 4 more directors, with four sets of actors, will stage mildly rehearsed readings of plays that we like, by playwrights we admire for your listening pleasure. But also plays that we aren't likely to see a production of for some time, for various reasons. But perhaps we should.

In this edition, Love, Bombs and Apples by Hassan Abdulrazzak and Chaapa Kaata by Irawati Karnik have been produced in Mumbai within the last 10 years, and have been missed by a couple of generations of younger theatre makers.

So all four plays are worthy of being read and heard - again or for the first time - for what they say, and what they could say if produced.
