DJEMBE RHYTHMS OF WEST AFRICA WORKSHOP
As part of the Spirit of Africa Festival, Akshara Theatre in association with The P(ART)icle Collective presents DJEMBE WORKSHOP with Yashdeep Khare and the Sunshine Ensemble.
The djembe is the most popular African drum instrument. It is goblet-shaped and played with bare hands.The djembe is thought have originated in Mali and is played throughout Western Africa. It is a symbol of peace and communal harmony. A djembe ensemble creates rhythm for people to dance, sing, clap, or work to, creating an intense bond between performer and listener. Yashdeep Khare and the Sunshine Ensemble are scholars and performers who introduce the concept of the djembe in entertaining and vigorously participative workshops.
