About the Event
Appa Art Assembly, a collaboration between Appa Art Fest and The Mumbai Assembly, is a gathering of artists from diverse backgrounds design, music, theatre, visual arts as well as inter-disciplinary forms. The festival believes in the ethos of bringing blending arts with sustainability and developing community partnership.
At the festival, the artist community will present creative expressions that explore various themes and issues emerging from our cultural and socio-economic circumstances. The festival will showcase established and emerging artists with works ranging from classical to experimental, engaging talk sessions, experiential workshops and performances exploring sound art. Over 50 artists will exhibit their work and over 20 artists will engage in workshops and interaction sessions.

1. Tribute to Artist K.N. Ramachandran:
Showcasing a selection of late K. N. Ramachandran's old school collections. You will get to know the influencers of those times in a highly informative exhibition. This collection is from the 40's, 50's, 60's where we can actually see a lot of influences in his paintings with the visuals of what he used to see in those days, for example, a woman stepping out of the bath carrying wet clothes. It will also include a glimpse into his collections of lithographs, magazine cover, and other print materials.
2. Appa Art Festival Residency Project - April-May 2016:
More than 50 Artists from all over India participated in the Festival held from 27 April to 1 May 2016, wherein a national-level artist camp was organised. The artworks created during this residency include paintings, sculptures and light art works, which will be exhibited for the first time in Mumbai at the Appa Art Assembly.
3. Triple X:
A never-seen-before project by renowned musician Randolph Correia will be featured in the section on new work. Adult only content.
4. CuRIOSA - The Immortals Within
CuRIOSA, in keeping with the tradition of Assemblage Art, is meaningful nothing, anything, something. Through the rich texture and colours of copper, brass, wood and many a perfect finding, it urges you to open the First Eye and explore the idea of Singularity in your own way, in your own time.
5. Blurring Boundaries:
Highlighting the work undertaken by design and digital artists, this section presents artists such as Tarqeeb and Echofloat. the digital explorations presented by Tarqeeb, The Big Fat Minimalist and Echofloat.
6. Merchants of Cool:
Born in the studio, this furniture piece is not only an element of décor or a style statement but is practical in its use as well. Behind each design is a story to be told, and what better way than letting the creation speak for itself.
7. 69, Put Yourself in my Pants and See
69 is the pattern in today’s urban Indian relationships. 6 and 9 are two stories looked at from two different perspectives, one where the protagonist is the victim with lots of unanswered questions while in the other the protagonist turns into the antagonist and thereby finds the answers his unanswered questions.

Nowadays smart phones have emerged to be a go-to device for all thingsrelated to images and design. Explore this medium through interactive presentation sessions with Echofloat and Tarqeeb, who will showcase their work and offer a glimse into their process of creating innovative digital designs.

When sound becomes music:

The tick-tock of the clock, the hum of the AC, the buzz of the refrigerator, the rustling of leaves amongst other everyday sounds. This workshop isolates these sounds, creates newer meaning of the noises around us, enables to find rhythm in the everyday movement and discovers joy in the gushing sounds of the waves. Exploring everyday sounds, this workshop helps realise that everyone has the ability to get immersed in music, just like fish in water.

This workshop will bring adults who worked with children (parents, teachers, counsellors and etc) to a space where they have cleanse their gaze, look with a fresh perspective and begin to see, seek and make newer meaning. Working with personal photographs, participants go through an exploration of what a photo tells us and how we can peel the layers of the given image to make new meaning. This would be followed by a similar exploration of objects used on daily basis to stimulate creative dialogue with young minds.

Body Speak:

The human body is certainly one of the most fascinating tools of communication and expression, but at the same time, one that is least used. This workshop aims to open up the bodies of its participants and enable them to use this most curious of machines in ways as yet unimagined by them. From fun-filled theatre games to invigorating physical exercises, the participants will be exploring their imagination and their stories through a range of activities derived from physical theatre, free-association movement, voice-work, and even dance!

Grow your food:
by Green Souls
Understanding sustainable gardening practices that one can employ with ease and ingenuity in day-to-day lives and creating a stronger relationship with nature through easy-to-learn gardening methods. A workshop that also enables a better understanding about the food that we consume and the benefits of fresh and organic produce.
