Pre-monsoon climate is the ideal period for fireflies and glow-worms for mating and in pursuit of the mate, hundreds of fireflies gather together on a tree displaying their bio-luminescent lights in the dark nights. Dense forests is just the perfect place for these twinkling creatures for this kind of ritual and this is the exact time when we can experience synchronous twinkling of hundreds of fireflies- one of the most beautiful phenomena in nature.

Fireflies belong to the family of beetles, and not flies as they are commonly mistaken for. These nocturnal winged beetles use bioluminescence, a chemical reaction when oxygen combines with luciferin, which is present in the lower abdomen of the insect to produce light.

All fireflies glow as larvae. Bioluminescence serves a different function in the larvae than in adults. It appears to be a warning signal to predators, for, the larvae contain chemicals that are either distasteful or toxic.

The little critters mate just before monsoon, and they attract / communicate to potential mates with a glow, which happens due to a chemical reaction. The males try to attract females with a 'light show'. If the female is sufficiently impressed, she lights back. Yup, 'you light up my life' has literal meaning here.

Sandhan Valley: The Valley of Shadow.

It is situated in the western ghats of Sahyadris. The valley is located on the west side of beautiful Bhandardhara region near Samrad village. The village itself is located approx. at 3000 fts above sea level. Valley is surrounded by Alang, Madan, Kulang, Kalsubai, Ratangad and Ajoba mountain range.This amazing place gives you the best of light and shadow experience while walking into it. Photographers Delight: It is awesome experience to capture fireflies in cameras. You can capture the Fireflies trail using long exposure. Also you can experiment with Multiple Exposure shots to capture multiplied effect of the flies.

Itinerary:

Day 1 :-

Meet our trek leader at given time 4 pm at kasara station platform number 1 side (catch your train according)( have your lunch before meeting)

Move towards samrad by 4.15 pm ,it's a 2 hours journey to samrad. 

Reach samrad , get fresh, have dinner and rest for sometime.(dinner made by locals in their house)

Let's go for a walk to spot fireflies around samrad.

Back to samrad and rest till morning in locals house's. (dormstay).

Day2:-

Wake up by 6 am and get fresh ( washroom available).

Have breakfast (chai and poha).

Start moving towards sandhan valley 

Return to samrad and have lunch , rest for sometime and move towards Pune.
