Poetic Encounters with Courtesan Culture of Old Delhi

Meeting Point: Hamdard Building, Ajmeri Gate near Ramleela Ground
Nearest Metro Station: New Delhi, Gate No. 4 (Take an e-rickshaw for Hamdard Building)
(Please reach the venue 15 minutes before, wear comfortable clothes & shoes, carry a bottle of water)
Explore the rich history of the tawaifs and their influential roles in shaping urban culture, and challenging the stereotypes associated with their names. The experience will feature a special walkthrough led by Tokeer Khan from Tales of City and poetry baithak by a well-known Kathak dancer Rani Khanum."
Tea and Bun Maska will be served.
About the Subject Matter Experts:
Tokeer Khan: Tokeer is not just a storyteller; he is a living repository of Delhi’s rich heritage. With a profound connection to the city, Tokeer embodies the spirit of 'Meri Rag Rag me Dilli Daudti hai' (Delhi runs in my veins). As a representative of the Qissa Go (Storyteller) Community within Tales of City, he combines his deep knowledge of Mughal history, art, architecture, and politics to offer an engaging and educational tour experience. Tokeer's passion for Delhi's cultural legacy ensures that participants gain a unique and insightful perspective on the city's historical landscape.
Rani Khanam: Rani Khanam is one of the most sensitive and astute interpreters of Lucknow Gharana of Kathak today and she has been performing professionally for the past thirty years. She brings to her dance a rare sense of devotion and dedication, which leaves the audience with a sense of spiritual fulfillment. Her style reflects a deep comprehension of the dance tradition which has set new dimensions and a source of inspiration to the younger generation.
