This September, Safarnama and Readings in the Shed bring you the spooks and the shivers!
Every new place, every journey, comes with its shadows. There’s something fascinating about the unexpected, the terrifying, and the unreal, from places you visit, and are yet to visit. As the rains ebb, let the mist settle in your mind, as you journey to familiar names, in an unfamiliar cloak. Four ghost stories from places along the Grand Trunk Road, that will give you the shivers. You’ll be glad for the bottomless sangria to restore your colour.
The Grand Trunk Road is one of Asia’s oldest and longest major roads, linking Central and South Asia for more than two millennia. Safarnama is an initiative by Taftoon, exploring the flavours along the GT, through stories across time. Henceforth at the end of every month, immerse yourself in stories from places, people, and cultures along the Grand Trunk Road from Kabul to Kolkata along with food from the region.
What can I expect from the evening?
Ghouls, ghosts, and stories of madness is what you can expect. Through the dramatized readings of the stories, discover hauntings, unhonoured promises, and the effect of not being able to let-go. All this with exquisite food from the region of the stories to tantalize your taste buds as you deal with the goosebumps.
What happens when the death of an old lover, with whom there are unfulfilled promises, comes back in their old rickshaw? And you don’t want your spouse to find out about them.
My Own True Ghost Story by Rudyard Kipling (Katmal)
A billiard-hall. An age-old patron who has passed on. Or have they? Can someone truly let go of the things and places they once loved after having left from this world?
The Man Who Would Be King by Rudyard Kipling (Lahore)
Two men who go in search of Kafiristan and vow to become kings. One returns with their story. What could possibly have happened in Kafiristan?
The Sandstone Past by Sehba Sarwar (Lahore)
Whose ghost is it that plagues a home? The elevator in this house has forever intrigued all its inhabitants. Strange stories have become legend. How true is it? What is this sandstone past?
The Moonlit Road by Ambrose Bierce
Three perspectives, remarkably different. Each with its own story to tell. About what you ask? About the night when one of them was murdered.
Ticket price inclusive of venue entry, an appetizer from a pre-fixed menu, and unlimited sangria or tea
Readings in the Shed is an initiative about the written word. It seeks to explore text that has originated from various parts of the world. It places the same in a performance by an artist who reads these texts through his life experience and perspective. The travails of the word along with the experiences of the artist make the text relevant to all audiences that witness it. Be it Chile or Syria, Britain or Greece, the initiative will travel everywhere through the written word while moving in Sheds across India.
Akshat Nigam
Akshat teaches literature, creative writing, and communication and has been performing as a professional storyteller for children and adults since 2015. He has worked in the field of arts education for nearly a decade, after having completed his Master’s in English Literature. In 2017, Akshat co-wrote ‘In Search of Dariya Sagar,’ a play that won the Hindu Playwright Award for scriptwriting that year.
Shruti Mishra
Shruti is a trained actor and movement coach, who works to integrate movement with text in creating novel and interesting forms of stories. She has worked in multiple productions like Antigone, Rewind Reverse Repeat, Yatagatasu and more. Along with actor Manish Chaudhari run The Yellow Door Theatre, their own theatre company.
Safarnama is an initiative by Taftoon, with the intention of discovering the history and culture of the places and people along the Grand Trunk Road through stories, poetry, music, and more.
