What is Halloween and when do we really celebrate it?
The Why
The earliest Halloween celebrations happened at-least a 1000 years ago! Although today it's celebrated as a holiday where kids and adults alike dress up in costumes, go trick or treat hunting or attend parties etc.
Halloween’s origins can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain. It was believed that on that day, the souls of the dead returned to their homes, so people dressed in costumes and lit bonfires to ward off spirits. In this way, popular Halloween tropes such as witches, ghosts, and goblins became associated with the holiday.
Halloween Across the World...
In countries such as Ireland, Canada and the United States, traditions include costume parties, trick-or-treating, pranks and games. Versions of the holiday are celebrated elsewhere, too. In Mexico and other Latin American countries, "Día de los Muertos"—the Day of the Dead—honors deceased loved ones and ancestors.
- Ireland: The Irish serve a sweet bread called Barnbrack - which is the nation's go-to dessert for Halloween.
- Scotland: The Scots have a tradition of their own that has nothing to do with candy, spirits or costumes; they throw nuts into a fire! And depending on how the nuts crackle' you could predict the outcome of your relationship!
- China: They have their own equivalent of the Day of the Dead - spread out over several days. It is called the Hungry Ghost Festival, and it involves honoring good spirits as well as avoiding evil ones.
- Japan: Although Japan does not have an equivalent day or festival like the Chinese do, modern day Japan has embraced the festival with a slight Japanese twist. What makes Halloween particularly fun and exciting in the big cities of Japan is the intense costuming. Cosplay is already a huge part of Japanese youth culture, so dressing up for Halloween is just another excuse to do it!
- Germany: Halloween is a recent addition to German culture and only started a few years ago. The few who do celebrate it, attend the Pumpkin Festival in Retzer Land or tour the old ruins of Burg Frankenstein castle - the origins of the Frankenstein horror story!
How India does Celebrates Halloween
Much like the rest of the world, Halloween is celebrated on the 31st of October every year in India as well. A fairly recent addition to a list of days celebrated here, Halloween is still an upcoming festival, driven by Western pop-culture.
Like most celebrations, this one too has its own menu! Yes, there's been a recent uptick in the number of restaurants serving not just spicy, but spooky menu! Besides the food, celebrations in India revolve around costumes, parties, and a horror movie night!
