Naturesapien is proud to present you with Humbling Hikes: a monsoons trek series with an eco-friendly and mindful approach. As part of this trek series we will be hiking through some amazing locations in and around the city with a naturalist, as well as learn about local cultures, get involved in volunteering or even learn to be more eco-friendly.
The trek to the fort will take you through lush green surroundings and abundance of nature, followed by a farm visit where you can try your hands on farming.
About the trail
Kohoj is located about 104 km from Mumbai off the Mumbai - Ahmedabad Highway. The height of the fort is about 3200 feet.
It takes approx 2. 5 hours from the village to reach the plateau. On the plateau of the fort, a temple of Lord Shankar and 3 groups of water cisterns can be seen. Fortification and remains of settlements can also be seen in some places. On the way that stretches from the right side of the temple up the hill, there are three large water cisterns; two of which contain potable water. On the top of this hill, we come across a bastion and a temple of Lord Hanuman. Their many natural pinnacles formed due to wind-erosion, two of them are man-shaped pinnacles which is one of the greatest wonders of nature’s creation.
Very few of the historical evidence is coherent to this fort. Looking at its well-dug cisterns, the fort can be said to be belonging to the Bhoj-period. But no such evidence is available. In the 16th century, the Portuguese captured this fort from the King of Gujarat. They constructed fortifications and bastions on this fort. Later, in the 18th century, Peshwe conquered this fort in their campaign of 1737. Afterwards, the fort remained under British rule.
Kohoj fort was one of the 23 forts surrendered by Shivaji under the Purandar Treaty that he signed with the Mughals in 1665. The Vaitarna river flows by at a distance, while the rest of the area is covered under nature’s green carpet during monsoons.
