Despite the notion that this is a batsman’s game, we have seen some fantastic bowling spells in VIVO IPL 2018. Using variations and guile, these bowlers have come out on top in difficult conditions. Here are Insider.in’s picks of the best spells so far:
Ankit Rajpoot: 5/14 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad
The only 5 wicket haul of VIVO IPL 2018 so far and it comes from a rather unlikely source. A phenomenal spell of fiery fast bowling that saw Rajpoot remove the entire SRH top 4 and reduce the team to a meagre 132/6 in their 20 overs. The 24 year old generated impressive bounce and movement with the new ball before completing a historic five-for in the last over of the innings. His spell also trumped Dimitri Mascarenhas’ 5/25 to become the best figures in KXIP’s history! A talented young seamer is always a welcome sight and his pace and bounce could prove to be very useful as KXIP look to pick up their first ever tournament trophy.
Mayank Markande 4/23 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad
One would be forgiven for not knowing who Mayank Markande was as Mumbai Indians took to the field in the VIVO IPL 2018 opener. The young leggie picked up 3/23 in that game and then proved it was no fluke in the very next against SRH with an astonishing spell of 4/23 in 4 overs. That his wickets included 4 of the top 5 only adds to the spell’s brilliance. Bowling the traditional leg-break and googly alike with aplomb, the 20 year old could not stop SRH from winning the game but definitely pushed them hard, and made him someone to look forward to for MI and India fans alike!
Rashid Khan 2/11 vs Mumbai Indians
The Sunrisers were forming a habit of defending low totals but when they were bowled out for 118 against the Mumbai Indians, most thought that would be beyond even them. Only once had a lower score been defended in this tournament’s history. Up stepped Sandeep and Shakib and Kaul and Thampi but most of all up stepped the magnificent Rashid Khan. He picked up the crucial wickets of Hardik and Pollard at a vital time in the innings, bowling 16 dot balls (!) and giving away just 11 runs as the Indians were skittled out for 87. An economy rate of 2.75 - the lowest of VIVO IPL 2018 - showcased all his varied talent. An amazing bowler with an amazing spell to achieve an amazing result!
Ravindra Jadeja 3/18 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore
MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to put the Royal Challengers Bangalore out of their comfort zone by asking them to bat first. Their batting order nevertheless was a frightening lineup of the biggest hitters in the game. Ravindra Jadeja, who hadn’t bowled as much as people expected of him thus far, wove his magic around them with an incredible spell of 3/18 in 4 overs. Starting with the big wicket of Kohli, he made sure the RCB innings never got going. His muted, almost surprised celebrations were entertaining as well and added the cherry on top of a fine performance. CSK chased the runs down with ease and Jadeja was named player of the match.
Rashid Khan 3/19 vs Kings XI Punjab
Just 2 days after helping the Sunrisers defend a paltry 118, Rashid Khan was called into action again, against the Kings XI Punjab. After their batsmen could only manage 132/6, his skills and cunning were needed again if they were to miraculously repeat their heroics. Rashid didn’t disappoint. He kicked things off by bamboozling the in-form KL Rahul with a googly, trapped Karun Nair with the same ball before closing things out with the wicket of captain Ashwin. The Sunrisers kept pace at the top of the table thanks to another Rashid Khan masterclass. Not the last one for sure!
