David Warner 109* vs Deccan Chargers 2012
David Warner’s whirlwind 109* was a masterclass in big hitting and manipulating the field. Set a daunting target of 188 by the Deccan Chargers, things got off to a rocky start when DD lose Virender Sehwag to the 2nd ball of the innings. That would be the only blip though as Warner took over, and how! His 109 came off just 54 deliveries and included 10 fours and 7 massive sixes. An unbeaten partnership of 189 with Naman Ojha of just 98 deliveries took DD home and to the top of the table. One of the most memorable knocks by any batsman in the tournament for sure!
Virender Sehwag 119 vs Deccan Chargers 2011
On May 5th 2011, DD played Deccan Chargers and put them in to bat. The Chargers put up a respectable 175, which they must have been confident of defending with bowlers such as Ishant Sharma, Dale Steyn and Amit Mishra in their attack. In just 5.4 overs they had DD on the ropes, at 25/3. The score must have barely even registered with Sehwag, who did as Sehwag does, and continued to flay the bowling to all parts. DD chased down the score in 19 overs, and Sehwag made an incredible 119 out of the team’s 179 runs. Facing just 56 deliveries, he hit 13 fours and 6 sixes in what was to be his first 100 in the tournament.
Quinton de Kock 108 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore 2016
DD hadn’t beaten Royal Challengers Bangalore in this tournament since 2010. After lightning 50s from Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers took the home side to 191 after 20 overs, it looked like the dismal run would continue. It didn’t. Quinton de Kock made sure of that by playing of the best innings the tournament had ever seen. His 108 came off just 51 balls. 15 fours and 3 sixes included to literally all parts of the ground. DD chased the mammoth score with 5 balls to spare. It also kickstarted a season for de Kock where he made 445 runs and was DD’s top scorer.
Rishabh Pant 97 vs Gujarat Lions 2017
DD hosted Gujarat Lions in an important game which the visitors had to win to have a chance at making the playoffs. It looked good for them, posting a gigantic 208/7 with the help of 50s from Raina and Karthik. Rishabh Pant had other ideas though, hitting 6 fours and 9 massive sixes on his way to a scintillating 97 off 43 deliveries. The Delhi boy showcased his full array of shots as he belted the Lions’ bowlers to all parts. For context, just one team had ever chased a score so big before, DD did it with 15 balls to spare.
Kevin Pietersen 103* vs Deccan Chargers 2012
DD were given a target of 158 to chase down and make it to the top of the table, and with a batting line up that included Sehwag, Jayawardene, Pietersen and Ross Taylor, it looked like a mere formality. But the Chargers fought back, and DD found themselves at 65/4 in the 10th over. Up stepped Kevin Pietersen. Smashing his first ever T20 century, he registered 6 fours and 9 sixes and finished unbeaten on 103 off just 64 balls. It was a murderous innings that showed every facet of Pietersen’s game, and the Delhi crowd saw a hundred for the ages.
