‘Looking Closely’ is an introductory session on art appreciation for beginners. The course will focus on how to look at the visual and contextual aspects of an artwork and unravel its various layers. Participants will be introduced to different kinds of art works - ranging from naturalistic to conceptual - and will address questions that often emerge when confronted with such works. The first part of the session will dwell on works by significant Indian artists while the second part of the session will focus on appreciating the art work on display in the exhibition Before the Canvas.
About the Facilitator:
Vaishnavi Ramanathan has curated Before the Canvas, and the immensely lauded ‘S.H. Raza: Traversing Terrains,’ which showcased five decades of S.H. Raza’s work from the early 1940s to the late 1990s; ‘Likeness Without Reference: Cultures of Forgery,’ tackling the issue of fakes and forgeries in the Indian art market; and ‘Making Art: Materials and Technology,’ dedicated to showing how materials play a key role in creating art and ideas, for Piramal Museum of Art.
