About the Artform
A 2500-year-old folk art, the history of Madhubani paintings is said to date back to the time of Ramayana when king Janaka asked an artist to capture his daughter Sita’s wedding to Prince Rama. These paintings were usually created by women on walls and floors of homes during festivals, ceremonies or special occasions. Having originated in the Mithila region in Bihar, this form of painting, also known as Mithila art, has been in practice in areas around Bihar and Nepal.
About the Workshop
In this 4-day masterclass learn to draw quirky Madhubani motifs and patterns and create your own hand-painted artwork. A beginner-friendly workshop where you can dive into a contemporary form of Madhubani art.
Elements you will you learn
Day 1: Basics and Motifs
- You will get acquainted with the most commonly used Madhubani motifs such as Fishes, Birds, Sun, Elephants, etc.
- Madhubani painting comprises of all-natural elements. Practicing the basics of these motifs will give a hang of the art form.
- Downloadable practice sheets would be made available prior to the session.
- Materials required: Pencil, eraser, paper (textured paper such as handmade paper/watercolor paper), fine-liners/pens & the practice sheet which would be provided for day-1.
Day 2: Borders
- You will be learning various intricate borders through this session.
- Borders form an eminent part of Madhubani paintings. It enhances the beauty of folk art. Eye-catching geometrical patterns is a typical feature of any Madhubani painting.
- Downloadable practice sheets would be made available prior to the session.
- Materials required: Pencil, eraser, paper (textured paper such as handmade paper/watercolor paper), fine-liners/pens & the practice sheet which would be provided for day-2.
Day 3: Painting
- You will learn how to use the basic motifs and borders to form your own painting.
- As a bonus, you will learn tips on colors and patterns that will compliment your artwork.
- Outlines of few artworks would be made available for participants to download.
- Materials required: Pencil, eraser, paper (textured paper such as handmade paper/watercolor paper), fine-liners/pens, acrylic/watercolor paints, brushes & preferred design from the designs provided for day-3.
Day 4: Coasters
- You will learn how to use this traditional art form on utility items and get an ethenic touch to your home.
- You will be drawing simple motifs to make attractive coasters.
- A set of 4 coasters will be shipped to participants.
- Materials required: Pencil, eraser, acrylic paints, brushes & a set of 4 coasters.

- Black fine liner 0.5mm
- Handmade paper/ cartridge paper 300 gsm
- Fevicryl acrylic colors ( 5-6 shades of their choice )
- Paint brushes sized 0,2,4,6
- Pencil
- Eraser
- Carbon paper - preferably yellow color
