About the Event
Mantoversial is a dramatised presentation of 3 Saadat Hassan Manto`s controversial stories. He had to defend himself in court because of them. All the stories and acts have been picked up from the partition era. Even after 75 years, these stories still captivate us. We will be presenting Boo, Thanda Gosht and Islah.
Boo:
One of the earlier stories which found Manto doing the rounds of courts. The story set in pre-independence India is probably one of the first ones to talk about "One night stands". It is a fine example of Manto`s graphic and imaginative style of writing as it takes you to far reaching corners of lust and love. The story of a man who gets ensnared by the scent of a woman. A woman who he doesn`t know, someone who he has decided to help out on a stormy night. However, in an unexpected turn of events, the narrator spends a night of passion and emotions, the likes of which he had never experienced before. He is left reminiscing the scent of a woman, who he can almost feel but can never touch again. The story will be amplified by an imaginative
and power packed narration.
Thanda Gosht:
Thanda Gosht is set in the immediate aftermath of partition. Manto was embroiled in the lengthy legal battle in Pakistan because of this story. The story begins with an attractive woman, Kulwant Kaur, waiting impatiently for her husband /lover Isher Singh to come and satiate both her physical and materialistic desires. However, for once, Isher fails to be aroused by her. Suspecting infidelity, she gets aggressive & forces him to come clean. A chilling confession follows sending shivers down her spine.
Islah:
Islah is set in the immediate aftermath of partition. The act based on the short story shows a satirical & tragic side of the so called flag bearers of Religion who are no more than mere rioters.
