About the walk:The walk explores the making of New Delhi through the lens of the freedom movement - discussing the history and politics that lay behind the design of the complex on Raisina hill, Vijay Chowk, and Parliament.

Author’s Bio: Swapna Liddle is an Indian historian, author, art curator, and heritage conservator based in Delhi. She completed her B.A. at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, followed by an M.A. and M.Phil. at Jawaharlal Nehru University, and earned her Ph.D. from Jamia Millia Islamia. 

Specializing in the history of Delhi, Liddle has extensively researched the city’s architecture, cultural heritage, and culinary traditions. She has been actively involved in heritage conservation, notably serving as the convener of the Delhi Chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). 

Liddle’s publications include:

• Delhi: 14 Historic Walks (2011)

• Chandni Chowk: The Mughal City of Old Delhi (2017)

• Connaught Place and the Making of New Delhi (2018)

• The Broken Script: Delhi under the East India Company and the Fall of the Mughal Dynasty, 1803-1857 (2023)

• Shahjahanabad: Mapping a Mughal City (2023)

Through her work, Liddle aims to raise awareness about Delhi’s historic precincts and advocate for the preservation of its architectural and cultural heritage.
