Following the success of his hilarious Amazon Prime special, Biswa Kalyan Rath is back - but this time, don't expect a bellyful of laughs or delightful randomness. His new show, Laakhon Mein Ek, follows the story of a small town teenager who - like so many others - was shoved into IIT coaching against his wishes. What he lacks in aptitude, he tries to make up with hard work and desire to please his parents - but things don't always go according to plan.
The show deals with several dark topics - including depression, failure and more. For those who don't know, Biswa is an IIT graduate himself, and parts of the story are inspired by his own experience.
The show has 6 episodes, each of which is half an hour long, making it an ideal binge-watch next weekend. The show released on Amazon Prime Video on October 13 (Friday).
Why you should watch:
- The writing is top-notch: While it might be a journey that many of us have been through, the story is unique enough to keep you gripped throughout. At the end of each episode, you'll want to see what happens to the lead character in the next. Supporting the lead are some very unique characters.
- The acting: With no star-cast as such to speak of, the series has very fresh faces delivering very polished performances. Every stereotype you can think of has been played to perfection: The overzealous South Indian 'topper', the dad who doesn't understand, the sympathetic but helpless mother, the annoying roommates, the corrupt peon, the business vs ethics principal. And Biswa himself... Well, leave it to you to find out what his role is.
- It's super-relatable: Anyone who's been through the horrors of coaching to achieve IIT dreams - or more precisely - their parents' dreams - will totally get this. It might bring back some uncomfortable memories, too. Brilliant Tutorials, anyone?
- It conveys one heck of a message: "If you're a parent, encourage your kids do what they want". "If you're a kid, pursue what you like rather than let society dictate what you should do". "If you're society, to hell with 'log kya kahenge'". All these messages are not exactly new - but seldom has it been said in such an effective manner.
The show features Ritvik Sahore, Shiv Subrahmanyam, Alam Khan, Jay Thakkar and Dharmesh Patel. It also has Biswa himself, and comedians Kumar Varun and Saurav Mehta.
