Why do great intent coupled with a great team still not lead to great impact?
How to engage in the complex education system within India?
When will we act to curtail the threats of climate change?
With organisations ranging from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Acumen Fund to Boeing, to even the British Government embedding this approach in their work towards SDGs & towards designing for the future, it’s high time to understand the practice that potential system holds. Systems thinking is a new wave of thinking posing important questions to the future of development approaches and the work we do towards impact.
Join us for this enlightening talk and an in-depth panel discussion, where we discuss a "Systems Approach" to complex problems, with Vikram Jain, Director, FSG, talking about his market-based solution for India's education sector, sharing his perspective from the trenches, and Prof. Sandy Smith-Nonini, Anthropologist, University of North Carolina, elaborating on why our current approaches are still insufficient to address the complex challenges we face as humanity. The fascinating subject and panel will be moderated by Aakriti Gupta, CEO, Unbound, who brings in her expertise from her work with the private sector and the development sector, to discuss the challenges and advantages of using a Systems mindset.
The panel will be followed by refreshments, and an opportunity to network with colleagues from across top firms in the development as well as the private sector.
Sandy, anthropologist and ex-journalist, is an adjunct professor, who has written about applying complex systems thinking to sustainability, focusing on environment, at Chapel Hill. She has also written highly acclaimed papers on Energy Inequality in Late-Capitalism, Sustainability, Systems Theory & Complexity, Politics of Health, etc. She runs a nonprofit that works on environmental education in Durham.
Vikram Jain – Director, FSG
Vikram is leading FSG’s Program to Improve Private Early Education (PIPE), to improve the learning outcomes of low-income urban children going to affordable private schools, addressing a market failure with a systemic approach. He has worked on similar problems in low-income housing in the past, opening up a previously unattractive affordable housing sector to investors.
Aakriti Gupta – CEO, Unbound
Aakriti has worked in the development as well as the private sector with McKinsey, FSG and many social enterprises. She holds expertise in the Systems approach to design for complexity and works closely with businesses to drive impact through growth. She has been studying the Cape Town water crisis for systems insights, besides working on urban health models for her clients.
