We start our evening with poetry and conversation between two poets who will take us on a journey of their shared tool of art to resist and respond to the socio-political upheaval of our times.

Meena Kandasamy is an activist, poet, novelist and translator. Her books of poetry include Touch and Ms Militancy, and she is the author of three acclaimed novels, Gypsy Goddess, When I Hit You and Exquisite Cadavers. In 2022, she was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (FRSL) and was also awarded the PEN Germany's Hermann Kesten Prize for her writing and work as a ‘fearless fighter for democracy, human rights and the free word.’ Her latest published work is Tomorrow Someone Will Arrest You, a collection of political poetry written in the last decade.

'Poems said in a time like our times i.e dark times, all the poems about whatsoever which provides for survival of people in these times. All the poems written in love. When it requires a sword to save your life but instead a poem is chosen. All of such poems are poetry in resistance.'

The often-used phrase ‘Art transcends Boundaries’ has become an axiom. However, the truth is that it is not art but the artist who enables a limitless embrace. The contours of an artistic creation are in the artist’s hands. The agency of art is truly that of the artist. Only when the artist intends it does art become a powerful transformative body that questions, teases, and brings down societal barricades.
