Class 1
CHOOSING YOUR RC AIRPLANE
As a newcomer, choosing and buying your rc plane correctly is going to have a big impact on your initial enjoyment of radio control flying. Because if you buy an airplane that’s not suitable for a beginner, or is of poor quality, you’ll have a nasty first experience with it and you’ll very likely quit rc flying for life – so please don’t let that happen!
Class 2
BASIC AERODYNAMICS
Know the science behind FLIGHT. it’s time to open the box and get familiar with it! Getting to know your rc airplane inside and out will maximise your enjoyment from it and help you greatly in those times ahead when you’re fixing it after a crash. DO NOT just rush out to the flying field before you’ve finished Learning the basics.
Class 3
SIMULATION
Incidentally, an rc flight simulator is an invaluable aid when learning how to fly an rc airplane, and we strongly recommend having one. Practicing in a simulator gives you an idea on controlling your aircraft. Take Off, Landing, Aerobatics and many more can be practiced at Zero Cost. Practice Makes Perfect, Patience and Practice Makes You A Master!
Class 4
RC Control Systems
GoRC flight school focuses on a typical electric Ready To Fly ‘park flyer’ type plane, and by this stage you’ve spent some time studying and getting familiar with your airplane. Let’s experiment with the tech by connecting things and hope not to see the MAGIC SMOKE from our electronics.
Class 5
Weight and Balance
Every airplane, whether model or real, has a Centre of Gravity (‘CG’ or ‘CoG’) that is determined in the plane’s design stage. This CG is where the plane balances longitudinally (nose-tail) and is crucial to the airplane’s flight characteristics. Getting the plane correctly balanced around the CG is an absolute must for safe and stable flying.
Class 6
SAFETY - DOS & DON'TS
Flying in the wrong place can potentially be very damaging to our hobby, especially since the rise of the drones and some associated press that the hobby has had in recent times. The crucial thing to remember when flying in a public area is safety, for flying your rc airplane from such a place, and always use common sense and act responsibly.
Class 7
PRE-FLIGHT CHECKLIST
The purpose of pre-flight checks is to ensure that your rc plane is in a fit condition to fly, and that everything is working as it should be. Exact pre-flight checks might differ from plane to plane, but there are some fundamental checks that all rc airplanes need to have done, immediately before flight. If you neglect to carry out the pre-flight checks before you fly, and something is badly amiss, then an avoidable crash is very likely.
Class 8
TAKE OFF/HAND LAUNCH
You’ve researched and bought your plane, got familiar with it, put it together, prepared it for flight, found a suitable location and now it’s time to fly it! The good news is that taking off or hand launching your rc airplane isn’t usually too much of an ordeal. Far less nerve-racking than the landing, at least!
Class 9
FIELD TEST FLIGHT - CRASHING AND REPAIR
We’ve been flying radio control planes for a few years now and we still get the shakes now and again. It’s all part of the fun and exhilaration of the hobby, but we’re not sure of the precise explanation; We guess it’s the fear of crashing that causes the adrenalin rush inside! The important thing is to not let your pounding heart and shaking hands get the better of you; stay calm, relaxed and focused on the job in hand – flying your rc plane!
Class 10
TOUCH THE SKY - AEROBATICS & LANDING
Whereas taking off is a relatively easy part of a flight, landing your plane is without doubt the hardest and most nerve-racking part, particularly when you’re just learning to fly radio control airplanes. But what goes up must come down, so they say, and learning to land your rc plane safely and well is something you must persevere at.
