About the Event
Ganjifa cards are circular handmade cards made on a plain sheet of paper.
Ganjifa’ is the name given to an ancient Indian card game. Quite aptly the name Ganjifa comes from the Persian word Ganjifeh which means playing cards. The speciality of these cards is that they are traditionally hand-painted by artisans.
Ganjifa is practised in small pockets of Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra, and Mysore, where dedicated communities of artisans strive to keep the card-making craft alive.
This workshop is on Ganjifa cards from Sawantwadi Maharashtra. We will be teaching one Avatar from the Ten Avatars (DASHAVTAR). A set of Sawantwadi Ganjifa consists of 120 cards and needs 3 players to play the game. This game needs a good memory to be able to remember all the cards which have been played in the tricks.
