Mumbai’s festive December gets its dramatic dose from AGP World Spotlight, a selection of some of India’s most successful plays. The plays offer a wide selection of moods, from light satire to chilling thrillers. Apart from long-running Mumbai classic acts like The Scent of a Man and 2 to Tango, 3 to Jive, you’ll find the cold intensity of the Barff, a dramatically engaging play, and Drama Queen, a sincere and intimate biographical play starring Suchitra Krishnamoorthi. Out of the 7 plays, one is premiering and the others have run 300+ times in total, to audiences exceeding 2.5 lakhs!
Here are the plays, along with some interesting facts around them.
The Scent of a Man
- Ashwin Mushran, the male lead of the play is also an accomplished salsa dancer and DJ.
- Suchitra Pillai, who plays the protagonist, is best known for her role in Dil Chahta Hai (2001), but made her cinema debut in a French film called Le prix d’une femme (1993)’
- The play has been running successfully since its debut in 2013.
Double Deal Reloaded
- Bharat Dabholkar, the male lead of Double Deal Reloaded is the brains behind Blame it on Yashraj, one of the India’s longest running English satires on Bollywood’s influence on weddings. Also, he's an advertising genius, having won 14 awards for his work on the famous Amul billboards!
- Manjari Fadnis made her Bollywood debut in Rok Sako To Rok Lo in 2004, and has since acted in films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Bengali.
- Mahesh Dattani, the director of the play is one of the India’s most successful English language playwrights and theatre directors.
2 to Tango, 3 to Jive
- Saurabh Shukla, best known for his roles with a comedic edge, plays the protagonist in 2 to Tango, 3 to Jive. He is also a national award winning screenwriter.
- Play actor Achint Kaur has been acting professionally across TV, stage, and films since 1994, when she made her debut in a show called Banegi Apni Baat on Zee TV.
- Actor Preeti Mamgain most recently wrote the screenplay for Mohenjo Daro, released in 2015.
- The play has run 100+ times, to audiences exceeding 80,000.
Barff
- Saurabh Shukla acted in Satya (1998), a film he co-wrote along with Anurag Kashyap.
- Saidya Siddiqui is a renowned film and television actress, who is best known for her role as Sandhya in TV show Balika Vadhu.
- Sunil Palwal most recently acted in 24, an Indian adaptation of a global TV show produced for Colors TV.
Bottoms Up
- Introduced in the ‘80s, Bottoms Up was well ahead of its time as a news satire show.
- The show is presented in a sketch format, with enough room for song and dance, high production values.
- The rotating cast that often sees the likes of Kunal Vijaykar, Bharat Dabholkar, and Ananth Mahadevan.
Drama Queen
- Actor, singer, writer, and more, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi has had an amazing life.
- She has sung to music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber in an album titled Zindagi.
- Her debut film was Kabhi Haan, Kabhi Naa, where she starred along with Shah Rukh Khan.
- Suchitra is also a novelist and writer, with her debut novel The Summer of Cool released in 2009. Drama Queen is also written by her based on her life.
Blame it on Yashraj
- The Bharat Dabholkar-directed play has had a run of over a hundred shows all over India and parts of the world.
- Ananth Mahadevan, who is a part of the cast, is known as a film, theatre, and TV actor-director.
- Jayati Bhatia, a part of the play’s cast is known face on TV, although she is also a part of the ensemble cast of The Vagina Monologues.
- The show has run 100+ times, to a crowd size of 83000!
