The sword disappears in the water
- spoken by Fugai, disciple of Genro the Wolf in Genro's koan, Case 90, in The Iron Flute.
As Zen spiritualist Bonnie Myotai Treace explains it, the sword disappears when there is no longer any sense of you and it, you and the koan, you and your practice. Completely immersed in the way, the way becomes you. You become one with your understanding, insight, expression. This is the way of Zen.
A koan is a zen riddle, or an anecdote, a story without an apparent conclusion or meaning, something to ponder over that will confer insight in unusual ways. In Sword in the Water, we pick up passages from texts to use them as koans, to do brief readings for us to ponder over.
Readings:
I'll be reading out from books that offer Zen wisdom, enlightenment, riddles and insight. We take to the works of the Dalai Lama, Jack Kerouac, The Tibetan Book of the Dead, and Koans from the Zen Masters. There is poetry, prose, meditation, clarity and bewilderment. You can either buy a copy of the book and read ahead and join in, or if you don't have a copy of the book, just listen as we read and contribute your thoughts.
Our format is a 20 minute reading and opening it out to a 10 minute discussion.
Schedule for April:
- 11 April, 2020 - The Book of Joy, Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu
- 18 April, 2020 - The Tibetan Book of the Dead, Robert Thurman
- 25 April, 2020 - The Wise Heart, Jack Kornfield
Please Note:
- Once you register, please check your email id (the one you register with) for a Zoom link and password.
