BDL Museum invites teachers and educators to participate in a full day of workshops focused on the theme "Democracy and Agency in Education," in collaboration with the University of Michigan Marsal Family School of Education and Reniscience Education.
8th October 2024
9:30 am - 6:00 pm
Charges: Rs 300 per participant. Tea and Lunch are included.

Open to all, preference will be given to middle and high school teachers.
Session 1:
Democratizing Teachers’ Professional Learning by Chris Torres
This session will focus specifically on the problem of practice related to learning new approaches to instruction that are meant to engage students’ curiosities, ideas and agency, an instructional approach that many students and teachers are not used to. We will learn the rationale and practice the basic process of instructional rounds, including problems of practice, observing classrooms, debriefing, and identifying next steps for improvement.
Chris Torres is an Associate Professor of Educational Policy and Leadership at the Marsal Family School of Education, University of Michigan. His research is focused on educator recruitment/retention and how school systems that incorporate school choice and accountability reform logic organize to improve student outcomes.
Session 2:
Stem Education and Student Agency by Dr Angela Calabrese Barton
In this session, participants will define ‘student agency’ and ‘voice’; and discuss why they matter in education. They will have an opportunity to reflect on how STEM education can play a vital role in building student agency, bringing forth student voices and developing their identities. They will also explore how STEM activities and projects can be used as both- a context and a tool for social transformation.
Dr. Barton is a Professor in Educational Studies at the Marsal Family School of Education, University of Michigan, a former chemistry teacher and informal science educator and continues to teach after-school STEM in community centres and maker spaces as a part of her research and practice.
Both sessions will be co-facilitated by Elizabeth Birr Moje - Dean of the Marsal Family School of Education at the University of Michigan. Moje teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in secondary and adolescent literacy, cultural theory, and research methods and was awarded the Provost’s Teaching Innovation Prize with colleague, Bob Bain, in 2010.

Exhibition Walkthrough: all answers take time by Annu P Matthew
The exhibition showcases eight distinct bodies of work that span nearly three decades of Matthew’s career. It elucidates the progression of a conceptual artist who uses photography, collage, animation, and parody to explore performative and nuanced elements of cultural identities.
