The play is an adaptation of a short story by the Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez, "I Only Came to Use the Phone" which was published in 1992 in an anthology of stories, Strange Pilgrims.
Maaya is returning to her home after a short vacation at her granny’s house in a small town, when her car breaks down. Desperate to call her husband, the magician Shekhar in Delhi, she hitches a ride on a decrepit bus and is deposited in a mental asylum, where she is accidentally admitted. The Head of the asylum persuades Maaya that she is in fact mentally ill and is too dangerous to ever leave; something the woman herself begins to believe, the longer she stays there. While Maaya struggles to prove her identity and sanity to the disbelieving asylum staff, her husband assumes she has run away with another man and his magic act falls into ruin without her.
Will she be ever be able to be free herself from this asylum? The question remains unanswered.
Performed by Akshara’s Diksha Hindi Students. Directed by Rajneesh Gautam
