Sukanya and Tejas invite you to their homes for an intimate baithak and dinner. In an effort to bring classical music closer to people, and to encourage artists in their imaginative pursuits, they are opening up their living room for monthly classical concerts.
Join in as you explore the intricacies of classical music together, and sometimes simply lose yourself to the flow of the music. The living room is cosy, and has just enough space for everyone to be able to enjoy the music and compare notes with each other from time to time. Feel free to ask questions and express your pleasure as the artist takes you on her journey.
The artist of the month, Anoushka Majumdar is a santoor player among the upcoming young artists of the country. While she received her initial training from her father, she is currently under the tutelage of santoor exponent Pt. Bhajan Sopori. She has been recognised by the Ministry of Culture as a promising artist, and has given many notable performances in the past. She will be accompanied on tabla by Shri Pradeep Chatterjee.
Dinner and tea.
Absolutely not! Anybody who appreciates music and is willing to listen, is welcome to the concert. The aim is to make the genre more accessible to everyone and share the love for it. During the course of the concert, the hosts will be happy to help you understand and appreciate the performance.
What is the format of the program?
Keeping in mind the homely atmosphere, the hosts invite only one artist per program. This way, the performer of the day has complete freedom to choose her pieces and improvize. The program will start with a short introduction to the artist and the genre. This will be followed by an hour long performance and dinner.
How long will the performance last?
Indian classical music is largely performed extempore, based only on a loose structure that helps the artist lay out her path. You can expect the performance to last about an hour, give or take a few minutes as inspiration permits.
What kind of food would be served for dinner?
The hosts would love to share a little piece of their home with you. All food served at the event will be cooked by them from scratch, so expect a hearty, home-made meal. In order to accommodate everyone and their tastes, they will only be serving vegetarian food - typically two mains and a side dish.
