The city of Delhi is a canvas on which stories are painted over and over by the passage of time. One such story is of the magnificeint city of Jahanpanah. Lost amidst the busy concrete jungle of South Delhi lie the remains of this city built almost seven hundred years ago. Jahanpanah, or the 'Refuge of the World', was founded around 1326 AD by the Sultan of Delhi, Mohammed bin Tughlaq. Weaving through the many structures that play hide and seek from within the modern urbanscape, this walk will attempt to trace the urban character and architectural language that existed during the time. At the height of its glory, it was visited by prominent travelers and historians from around the world, many of whom have left us with vivid descriptions of the architecture and pompous life that the city was once graced with.
During the walk, a number of accounts of contemporary historians such as Ibn Battuta and Ziauddin Barani will be referred to in order to picture the kind of life that existed during the time that these monuments were in use. Timur's own description of Jahanpanah, and the aftermath of his devastating invasion in 1398 will also be discussed as one of the reasons for the depopulation of the city. Touching upon the key aspects of medieval cities of Delhi, and that of Tughlaq architecture, participants will embark on an architectural journey through the rise and fall of what was once the seat of power for much of the Indian subcontinent.
