THE SPIRIT OF AFRICA FESTIVAL
The Spirit of Africa Festival is a vibrant and joyous two-day celebration of the theatre, music, literature, art, poetry and food of the African continent. Theatre performances include a selection of critically acclaimed plays and stories by outstanding playwrights like Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka of Nigeria (Scapegoat – Hindi play directed by Rajneesh Gautam), playwright and author Ama Ata Aidoo of Ghana (My Child Yaaba, a children’s play directed by Anasuya Vaidya) and African-American playwright-actress Ntozake Shange (When The Rainbow Is Enough – directed by Sujatha Balakrishnan). Music performances include gigs by Conogolese-Nigerian band Black Gang Music, the foot-stomping Djembe Rhythms of West Africa by the Sunshine Ensemble, who will also hold a workshop-demonstration on the Djembe. Academic symposia on African literature, documentary and feature films, poetry from the African Diaspora, food from Somalia, coffee from Ethiopa, photography exhibition, art installations, quiz, and the icing on the cake – Africa-themed stand up comedy! All this and more at the Spirit of Africa Festival at Gopal Sharman and Jalabala Vaidya’s iconic Akshara Theatre in the heart of the city!
