Journeys are about discovery, of the self, new places, people, cultures and traditions. This introductory workshop will introduce you to tie and dye – beginning with a short historical perspective of the craft, the distinct styles that have emerged through the years in different geographies in South Asia, and the tools needed.
The philosophy of this studio is to create unique and distinct hand-crafted textiles(stoles/scarves/saris/fabric by meter), that have a universal appeal with special attention to detail in techniques of shibori (Japanese tie & dye - stitched and clamp ) married with hand-embroidery and block prints by employing and empowering ‘only’ women belonging to weaker backgrounds.
The workshop is based on a coconut farm on the outskirts of Bangalore in a green belt. The core team consists of 10 women, originally farmers who have taken extremely well to the Shibori craft after extensive R&D and training over the years. The team is committed and enthusiastic to create beautiful hand-crafted textiles. It now has its own in-house dyeing which brings in more room for control of quality and creativity!
Shibori uses the stitching technique of resisting, wherein the resisted portion is stitched and then pulled to make gathers. The Shibori cloth is bound, resisted, wrapped and gathered by hand and this step is repeated for each colour dye it is dipped in, making it an elaborate process.
After a quick demo, you get to craft your own personalized creation by choosing from a variety of designs on wooden blocks, and a range of colors. For the workshop, you will be working on a silk stole - 14" x 1.8 mtrs, and experiment on cotton base. Working with a textile designer allows you to develop a fuller appreciation and outlook into a world filled with colour and seeped in tradition and old-world techniques.
