Would you like to help make free coding resources available to children in India? If yes, volunteer virtually to help the Raspberry Pi Foundation translate coding resources from English to Kannada or Marathi.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation is a UK-based non-profit with the mission to put the power of computing and digital making into the hands of people all over the world. Hundreds of thousands of children between the ages of 7-17 regularly use their engaging, detailed, and free educational resources to learn to code. To reach even more children, especially in communities that may not have access to high-quality computing education, they need to translate the resources into as many languages as possible. Volunteers can find more about how they translate their resources here: https://projects.raspberrypi.org/en.
How can volunteers help?:
Volunteers will be assigned projects by the Raspberry Pi Foundation team to translate or review. As a translator, a volunteer will have to improve on the existing machine translations. Once the translators finish their tasks, their projects will be assigned to the reviewers who will check the translations for accuracy and its suitability for children.
Once volunteers sign up, they will:
- Receive a training invite by 3rd August
- Attend a mandatory training with the Raspberry Pi Foundation before the beginning of the translation hackathon, around 8th August
- Work on assigned projects between 8th August and 15th August
- Join the translation hackathon slack channel so the team can answer any urgent doubts while they are translating
Things to keep in mind:
All volunteers need is:
- Fluent knowledge of English and Kannada/Marathi (only)
- An Internet connection and a computer
- Basic understanding of coding will be helpful but not essential
Time commitment needed by the Volunteer:
4 – 6 hours between 8th August – 15th August
Meet the Team
The translation hackathon is managed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, India team and supported by the Translations team based out of UK. Computer-assisted translation tools and machine translation may be integral parts of their work, but volunteer translators are at the heart of their translation efforts. The translation hackathons were introduced to give volunteers the opportunity to contribute on a one-time basis. You can find more about how they translate their resources at https://projects.raspberrypi.org/en
