Adapted from the Aranyakanda of the Ramayana, Vali Vadha tells the story of the two vanaras or forest-dwelling brothers, Vali and Sugreeva. In this prasanga, or episode, Vali and Sugreeva are estranged and must confront the rakshasas, Mayavi and Dundubhi to protect the kingdom of Kishkindha. The episode concludes with the death of Vali at the hands of Rama, who attacks him by violating the code of battle and justifies his action as the upholding of his dharma or duty. The director, Prithvirajesh Kumar SK, sees this as the story of the Adivasi. The episode of Vali Vadha is one among many from the Ramayana that are popular in the Yakshagana repertoire.
