ABOUT VICKY ROY:
Originally from West Bengal, Vicky Roy ran away from his home and started working as a rag picker at the New Delhi Railway Station, before he was rehabilitated by an NGO, Salaam Baalak Trust, Delhi.
By 2016, he had been listed in Forbes Asia 30 under 30.
After being rehabilitated by Salaam Baalak, he went on to study photography, work as an apprentice, in 2007, he held his first solo exhibition, "Street Dream", supported by the British High Commission.
In 2008 he was one of four photographers across the world to be selected by the US-based Maybach Foundation to photo document the reconstruction of the World Trade Center in New York.
As part of the program, he also undertook a course in documentary photography at the International Center for Photography, New York.
His first monograph ‘Home Street Home’, was released at the second edition of the Delhi Photo Festival (Sept-Oct, 2013). He was part of Houston FotoFest Biennnial and Kochi Muziris Biennale in 2018. ‘Scraping the Sky’ was exhibited at Asia Society Texas Centre in 2019. He was awarded the MIT Media Fellowship in 2014 and listed as Forbes Asia 30 under 30 in 2016.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
Vicky will exhibit and take us though the journey of creating select works, including pieces from the World Trade Reconstruction, Street Dreams, Home Street Home among others. In the process, he will share his insights on the nuances and challenges of photography as a career, specifically in the social documentary space, while also opening up about his personal relationship with his work, and his life story. Post this, there will also be a moderated Q&A session on his story, and making a career in the space.
