Where do they all belong?

Exhibition of paintings by artist Ranjan Kaul

24th - 29th May 2019

Artist statement

The quotidian lives of ordinary people living on the edge in the big city interest me. Mostly migrants from villages or small towns in search of a livelihood, they reside in shanties or make pavements their temporary home.Severed from their moorings, sharing spaces with strangers, they strive for a sense of belonging. My paintings depict their myriad emotions, predicaments and compulsions. I portray their loneliness, their sense of rootlessness, the tedium of eking out a living.

As a humanist and a figurative artist, my art is a manifestation of my emotional response as an observer of these vulnerable citizens. Without compromising on aesthetic appeal, I believe in pursuing art that has a ‘connectedness’ with social reality.
