About the Event

Will you participate? Will you be manipulated? Will you listen? Will you really listen?

With no rehearsals, no director, and a sealed script handed to a new performer every show. Internationally acclaimed White Rabbit Red Rabbit, by Iranian writer Nassim Soleimanpour, is an audacious theatrical experiment and a potent reminder of the transgressive and transformative power of theatre.

Trigger warning: it contains topics that are mentally and emotionally sensitive in nature.

QTP and Natak Company are proud to produce the digital edition of White Rabbit Red Rabbit for the initiative of Let there be theatre! [Scroll down to read more about the initiative]

On 13th March, Aurora Nova invites theatres worldwide to mark the anniversary of the longest theatre shutdown in modern history. The initiative aims to create an extraordinary global event that celebrates live theatre and the resilience of our sector. And therefore, an adapted version has been developed for zoom performances.

SHOWS

There are three shows at 8pm in English, Hindi and Marathi, all at the same time. You can choose to watch any one of them:

English Performance by Mantra Mugdh (He has acted in productions like Disney's Aladdin and The Company Theatre's Piya Behroopiya. He has been a radio host and has acted in films like Panipat, High Jack and Tum Mile)

Hindi Performance by Jayati Bhatia (She works extensively in the film and theatre industry. She is well known for her roles in plays like Khatijabhai of Karmali Terrace, Vagina Monologues and Blame it on Yashraj. She has also worked extensively in TV series like Sasural Simar Ka, Internet Wala Love and Lockdown Ki Love Story)

Marathi Performance by Pushkaraj Chirputkar (He is widely known for his role of 'Ashu' on the Marathi sitcom Dil Dosti Duniyadari, as well as for his role in its sequel, Dil Dosti Dobara. Since then he has appeared in Hindi and Marathi movies, and also on web-series)

Note: This play is NOT overtly political, and should not be portrayed as such. It operates on a deeper, metaphoric level, and very expressly avoids overt political comment. All media and press agents have to keep in mind that the playwright is an Iranian native. We therefore ask the press to be judicious in their reportage.

LET THERE BE THEATRE!

Friday the 13th of March 2020 was the day most theatres in the world had to shut down. Initially it was thought that the closure would last just one month or maybe two or until July at the very latest. It soon became clear that most venues had to remain dark until now - March 2021. The longest theatre shutdown in modern history.

Aurora Nova invite theatres worldwide to mark the anniversary of that day by creating an extraordinary global event that celebrates live theatre and the resilience of our sector. An event that generates much needed income as well as hope and inspiration in this time of uncertainty and isolation. On the 13th of March 2021 in all countries in the world we want a play to be staged. A play which is living proof that creativity can overcome adversity. The appearance of new virus variants resulting in stricter lockdowns in many countries means that many will not be able to stage White Rabbit Red Rabbit on March 13th with a live audience after all. A adapted version has been developed for zoom performances.

The story behind the idea: Ten years ago, almost to the day, Wolfgang Hoffmann, Aurora Nova’s Director performed in a show at the Fadjr Festival in Tehran. At the festival hotel he was introduced to a young unpublished playwright, who did not have a passport, because he had refused to do military service. In order to get his work in front of an audience, he had devised a play that had to be performed as a cold read, without the need of a director, set or rehearsals. All it needed was for a brave performer to agree to read a text in front of a live audience, without first knowing what the play was about. Wolfgang liked this young man and loved his idea and spontaneously agreed to help produce his show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe later that year. When he finally saw the show performed live, he realised what this playwright had achieved. Through the power of his words alone he had written himself to freedom.
