Sourendro & Soumyojit’s World Music Day 2025 – 15th Edition
Kolkata comes alive once again with rhythm, melody, and innovation as celebrated musicians Sourendro and Soumyojit return with the 15th edition of World Music Day, held annually on the Summer Solstice. Over the years, Kolkata has witnessed some of the most creative musical experiments through this celebration, drawing an incredible audience of music lovers from all walks of life.
Expect an unforgettable musical journey featuring 20 of India’s most celebrated performers.
Adding to the magic, this year’s edition will feature exclusive and never-before-heard musical collaborations and experiments, pushing the boundaries of genre and tradition.
A band of live musicians, instrumentalists joining the team from all across the country, A Live Choir, choreographic Extravaganzas and Stage Craft awaits a great evening of coming together.

Artist

Shankar Mahadevan is a legendary figure in Indian music, celebrated for his extraordinary versatility as a singer, composer, and performer. As a key member of the iconic Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy trio, he has shaped the sound of modern Bollywood with unforgettable hits like Breathless, Mitwa, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Maa. Known for his powerful vocals, classical mastery, and genre-defying style, Shankar effortlessly bridges Indian classical, folk, and contemporary music. Beyond the studio, his dynamic stage presence and emotional depth continue to mesmerize audiences across the globe. With numerous national awards and a legacy spanning decades, Shankar Mahadevan remains a true pioneer and one of India’s most beloved musical voices.

Shilpa Rao is a prominent and versatile Indian playback singer celebrated for her soulful voice and expressive delivery. With a career spanning numerous Bollywood hits and independent music projects, she has captivated audiences with her ability to seamlessly transition between genres, from soft, romantic melodies to upbeat, energetic tracks. Known for her distinctive vocal texture and nuanced interpretations, Shilpa Rao has lent her voice to some of the most memorable songs in recent Indian cinema, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base for her captivating artistry and emotional depth.


Raghu Dixit is an Indian singer-composer, songwriter, and producer who is known for his multilingual folk music band - Raghu Dixit Project. What makes the band special is that they perform music in different languages and they don't shy away from experimenting with their tunes either. Vishal-Shekhar were the ones who launched Raghu's self-titled debut album. The album soon topped the iTunes World Music charts in the UK, and in April 2012, he performed for Queen Elizabeth II of England and Prince Philip, at a Diamond Jubilee Pageant. Raghu has travelled far and wide with his music, to countries like UK, Japan, Korea, Russia, Hong Kong, USA, and more. Some of his well-known songs include Jag Changa, Antaragini, Kidki, Mysore see Aayi.

Malini Awasthi is a highly acclaimed Indian folk singer, often referred to as the "Folk Queen of India." Classically trained, she is renowned for her mastery of various forms of Hindustani music, including Thumri, Dadra, Kajri, and Chaiti. Awasthi is particularly celebrated for her powerful voice and deep connection to traditional Indian folk songs, sung in dialects like Awadhi, Bhojpuri, and Bundelkhandi, which she has actively worked to preserve and popularize. Her performances resonate with soulful melodies and express the rich cultural heritage of India, earning her widespread recognition and prestigious accolades, including the Padma Shri.

Somlata Acharyya Chowdhury is a renowned Bengali singer and a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at Asutosh College, University of Calcutta. She gained widespread recognition with the songs Tumi Asbe Bole and Jagarane Jay Bibhabaree from the film Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona (2011), and has been a prominent voice in Bengali cinema since 2007. Beyond playback singing, she leads the band Somlata & the Aces, known for their dynamic blend of Indian semi-classical, pop rock, folk fusion, Sufi, and modern film music. The band has performed across India and internationally, including in the USA, UK, Canada, UAE, and Bangladesh, earning a strong youth following through campus festivals, public concerts, and global shows.

Anwesshaa is a multilingual Indian singer and composer known for her work in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, and several other Indian languages. She rose to fame at age 13 through Chhote Ustaad on national television and began her playback career with the Bengali film Khela (2008). Her Bollywood debut came with Golmaal Returns at just 14. With over 500 film songs to her credit, Anwesshaa has lent her voice to movies like Raanjhanaa, Revolver Rani, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, and Do Lafzon Ki Kahani, among many others. She has also sung in regional and international projects, including Bangladeshi films. In 2023, she made her debut as a composer with the Marathi film Pahije Jatiche, handling both music and background score. A recipient of the Filmfare Award (East), Anwesshaa continues to be a dynamic and evolving presence in Indian music.

Sourendro and Soumyajit are a dynamic musical duo hailing from India, celebrated for their innovative approach to music. Pianist Sourendro Mullick and vocalist Soumyojit Das masterfully weave together classical roots with contemporary sounds, creating a captivating and unique sonic experience. Known for their grand, experimental projects and vibrant collaborations, particularly their annual World Music Day concerts, they have garnered wide acclaim for pushing musical boundaries and enchanting audiences with their artistry.

Hariharan Anantha Subramani is a legendary Indian playback, bhajan, and ghazal singer known for his rich, soulful voice and versatility across languages. He has sung over 15,000 songs in more than 10 languages, including Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, and Bengali. He gained national recognition with the song Ajeeb Sa Neha Mujh Par Guzar Gaya Yaaron, earning a state award and a National Award nomination. His iconic collaboration with A.R. Rahman began with Thamizha Thamizha in Roja (1992), followed by numerous hits like Uyire Uyire, Taal, Rangeela, and Guru. He won two National Awards—for Mere Dushman Mere Bhai (Border) and Jiv Rangla (Jogwa). A pioneer in Indian ghazals, Hariharan has over 30 albums to his name, including Aabshar-e-Ghazal, Gulfam, Halka Nasha, and Kaash. His ghazals have earned critical acclaim and commercial success, influencing generations of listeners and musicians alike.

Sukhwinder Singh, is an accomplished Indian playback singer renowned primarily for his energetic and powerful contributions to Bollywood music. He began his career in the early 1990s but gained significant recognition with the iconic song "Chaiyya Chaiyya" from the film Dil Se.. (1998), for which he won a Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer. Known for his dynamic vocal style and ability to infuse raw energy into his songs, Sukhwinder Singh has lent his voice to numerous hit tracks across a wide range of Bollywood films. His collaboration with music director A.R. Rahman has been particularly successful, resulting in memorable songs like "Jai Ho" from Slumdog Millionaire, which earned him a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.

Rekha Bhardwaj is a highly acclaimed Indian playback singer known for her soulful and distinctive voice, often lending a rustic and earthy quality to her songs. She has sung a wide variety of songs in Bollywood and other regional film industries, earning critical acclaim and numerous awards, including National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards. Some of her big hits include "Sasural Genda Phool" (Delhi-6), "Darling" (7 Khoon Maaf), "Ghagra" and "Kabira" (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani), "Judaai" (Badlapur), and "Ranjha Ranjha" (Raavan).

Papon, born Angaraag Mahanta on November 24, 1978, in Assam, India, is a celebrated Indian singer, composer, and music producer. Known for his distinct voice and versatile music style, Papon blends Assamese folk, classical, and contemporary genres to create a unique sound. He gained widespread recognition with hits like “Jiyein” and “Bulleya” from Bollywood films, and his soulful performances have earned him a loyal following. Papon’s work often reflects his deep connection to his roots, spirituality, and a sense of emotional depth, resonating with audiences worldwide.

Shweta Mohan is a renowned Indian playback singer known for her work across Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada cinema, along with a few Hindi projects. Trained in Carnatic music from the age of nine, she began her career as a child singer in A.R. Rahman’s compositions like Kuchi Kuchi Rakkamma (Bombay) and Accham Accham Illai (Indira). Shweta Mohan has carved her own path, collaborating with top composers such as Ilayaraja, A.R. Rahman, Vidyasagar, and Anirudh Ravichander. With five Filmfare Awards South, a Kerala State Film Award, and a Tamil Nadu State Film Award, she is celebrated as one of South Indian cinema’s leading voices.

Rupam Islam is a prominent Indian singer-songwriter, music composer, and writer, best known as the lead vocalist of the iconic Bengali rock band Fossils. Since forming the band in 1998, he has played a key role in shaping the Bengali rock music scene, with Fossils releasing six successful albums. Beyond rock music, Rupam has made a significant mark as a playback singer in Bengali cinema, earning the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 2010 for Mahanagar @Kolkata. He has also composed music for TV shows, commercials, and released several solo projects. A respected figure in the cultural landscape, Rupam is a member of the Bangla Sangeet Academy under the Government of West Bengal.

Pratibha Singh Baghel is a renowned Indian singer known for her work in Hindustani classical music, ghazals, and Bollywood playback singing. Born in Rewa, she holds music degrees in Sangeet Prabhakar and Sangeet Parveen and began her training in thumris under the influence of her uncle. She gained recognition as a top finalist on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009, which launched her into the world of live performances and film music. Her playback credits include films like Manikarnika, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, Baazaar, and Dono. Her acclaimed ghazal Jheeni Re Jheeni with Rashid Khan and the album Bole Naina with Gulzar, Zakir Hussain, and Deepak Pandit showcase her classical depth. She has also released popular singles such as Dhaagey, Ilzaam, Kanha ki Preet, and Kaise—The Music of Goodbye. Javed Ali is a renowned Indian playback singer celebrated for his soulful voice and versatility across various genres. He has lent his voice to numerous Bollywood hits, including “Jashn-E-Bahaara” from Jodhaa Akbar and “Kun Faya Kun” from Rockstar. Beyond his singing career, Javed Ali has made significant contributions to television, serving as a judge on popular reality shows such as Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs and Indian Idol Season 10.

Kalpana Patowary is a renowned Indian playback and folk singer from Assam, celebrated for her soulful renditions in multiple languages, including Bhojpuri, Assamese, Hindi, and more. She has sung in over 32 languages and is acclaimed for her mastery of various Bhojpuri folk forms such as Purvi, Pachra, and Kajri . Kalpana gained national recognition with her participation in the reality show Junoon – Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka in 2008 .

Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan is a distinguished sitar virtuoso from the Etawah gharana, renowned for his mastery of both the vocal-inspired "gayaki ang" and the rhythmic "tantrakari" styles. A seventh-generation heir to a legendary musical lineage, he has received numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and has performed at major festivals worldwide .
