A zine is a hand made, small circulation self published magazine. In making a zine you are effectively your own editor, publisher, distributor and boss, there are no requirements and no rules.
Zines can often help us make a tangible connection to our own personal histories and in turn can help ground us in the present. Zine making can be a great way to share stories and experiences.
This fun and hands-on class will give you the tools and know-how to design your own zine using a wide array of styles, from photocopying to collage techniques, bleach/ watercolor, ink etc.
Materials you will need to bring with you to class:
xeroxes of old photos, Collage material, ephemera, Any drawing or mark making materials you would like to bring We will only use black and white
So black pens, thin and thick permanent markers, acrylic/alcohol markers, ink, poster paint, etc., white correction pens/add gel pens, white poster paint & thin brushes, Scissors, Gluestick, Letter stamps.
Project:
We’ll be making a zine about a topic you’re passionate about and
We’ll talk about creating visual interest.
We’ll discuss the difference between computer layout vs. cut-and- paste layout. We’ll look at examples and examine the various styles of zines.
About the Facilitator
Ruchi Bakshi is a filmmaker, artist and toymaker. She studied Communication Design at the National Institute of Design and has several award winning live action and stopmotion shorts to her credit.
Her picaresque characters, often based on outlandish folklore and equipped with supernatural powers, seem to inhabit a strange and wonderful world of myth and fancy. Her work stands for her own fringe theories about the origin of this world.
Everything that surrounds her soaks into their art. She is interested in creating an alternative way of seeing. Her style is illustrative and consists of haphazardly associative imagery containing a phantasmagoria of creatures based on outlandish folklore, equipped with supernatural powers of imagination and magic, scrutinized under a magnified gaze
