SYNOPSIS
In this one-hour Hindi musical satire, inspired by Akira Kurosawa's film "Kagemusha," a petty thief is hired as a double for a deceased king. The thief, fascinated by his newfound authority, struggles to shed his original characteristics. The play combines elements of Tiatr, Chitrakathi, and Dastangoi, with live music influenced by "Tiatr." The performance vocabulary is developed using ‘Dastangoi’.
Director's Note:
In this production, Theatre Flamingo aims to create an innovative blend of mixed cultures and experimentation on stage, presenting a political satire that challenges traditional boundaries. Drawing inspiration from Akira Kurosawa's film "Kagemusha," they have integrated elements of Tiatr, Chitrakathi, and Dastangoi, creating a unique performance vocabulary. The visual poetry of Chitrakathi, originating from the Konkan Region, will be combined with the vibrant music of 'Tiatr,' while the story narration will be influenced by the essence of Urdu found in 'Dastangoi'. To further enhance the performance, they have researched Goan folk practices and Kalaripayattu, the ancient martial art from Kerala, to develop the movement vocabularies of actors on stage. Through this integration and experimentation, they aim to create a captivating and thought-provoking theatrical experience.
About Tiatr
Tiatr is an interesting traditional Goan performance that involves 6 or 7 acts called Podd'dde, which are of short duration of around 15 minutes. "Konkani tiatr" popular for its high entertainment value, is a dramatic art form unique to Goa coming from Portuguese theatre culture.
About Chitrakathi
Chitrakathi is an oral storytelling tradition, once popular in the Maharashtra-Karnataka region of the southwestern coastal belt. 'Chitra' means painting and 'katha' is a story. Chitrakathi developed in the form of small finely painted images about historic or religious events. Chitrakathi now exists in Maharashtra only (and is on verge of extinction). They largely depict stories from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. Traditionally a single person would recite the story in baithak format with the live music and songs.
About Dastangoi
The storytelling tradition, "Dastangoi," comes from "Dastan" in Persian, meaning 'story,' and "goi," meaning 'to tell. ' Traditional bards, called "Dastango" in Persian, acted out these tales in parts of the Arab world, Persia and India.
