ABOUT THE WALK

"This is a walk through one of Delhi’s Bengali ghettoes, Chittaranjan Park, on an unforgettable street food trail. It’s an area that was set aside for the East Pakistan Displaced Persons Association, representing the refugees who came to Delhi in thousands following the creation of Bangladesh in 1971. As more people from West Bengal joined in, the area’s culture and tastes began to resemble those of Kolkata and Dhaka. It also mirrored the history of refugees in Kolkata, whose arrival in the late 1940s and early 50s changed that city’s food habits forever.

Many questions will be asked, and answered, on this walk. Like, when and how did street food flourish in Kolkata? What were the cries of street hawkers in the erstwhile colonial capital? How did India become a nation of tea drinkers, beginning in Kolkata? And, in the recent past, how has CR Park’s food survived the area’s gentrification?"

ABOUT THE WALK PARTNER

Amitava Sanyal is a lapsed journalist who is interested in urban histories. His interest in the streets of Kolkata – and the food available there – deepened with his research into the social history of football and refugees in the city.

FAQ'S
Please bring along a bottle of drinking water. An antacid tablet is also recommended – Bengalis are particularly fond of the brand Gelusil, which is almost a necessary part of any menu.
Dress for walking along busy roads.
The nearest metro station is Nehru Place on the Violet Line, which is a 10-15-minute auto/taxi ride away. If on the Yellow Line, it’s a 20-30-minute ride from the Hauz Khas station. Ask for Market No 1 of CR Park.
Parking close to the starting point is likely to be very difficult, especially on a weekend. Spots closer to the Shiv temple, about 200 metres up the road, might be easier.
Ticket Exclusions
The cost towards food, tea etc will have to paid for individually to each street vendor
. Please carry change in cash worth INR 400.
