ABOUT THE WALK
Our walk will cover the history of Shahjahanabad, with special reference to Chawri Bazar, Nai Sadak, Jama Masjid, Dareeba and Kinari Bazar. We will discuss the trades, the crafts, the changes, the impact of the Marathas, the Colonialists, the toady’s, post-independence interventions and neglect, and the impact of the Metro. We will explore the various types of street food available, talk about the events of 1857, discuss the advent of blinds, awnings, the cast iron pillar, the terrace and the iron shutter. We will also talk about the life of the courtesans and their decline, and listen to tales about famous women - one who declined an invitation to perform at the palace of a Prince and another who became the senior-most begum of the First British Resident of Delhi - and much more!
