ABOUT THE WALK
Roshanara Garden is a Mughal-style garden built by Roshanara Begum, the second daughter of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Spread over 57 acres, it is situated in Shakti Nagar, North Delhi. The garden has a raised canal, leading to a white marble pavilion built in memory of the princess Roshanara, who died in 1671 and was buried there.
This venue is steeped in history. It was believed the Roshanara was instrumental in helping her brother Aurangzeb in his accession to the throne. Roshanara Bagh is relatively unknown to residents of Delhi as well as travellers.Though its upkeep has much wanting, there are certain sights unique to it - The first unusual sight that greets one are the Bagulas /cattle egrets which sit on the crowns of the Jungle jalebi trees, on either side of the entrance gate to the Roshanara Club, directly opposite.
Even the chai-wallah asks you - Are you looking for the Bagula's!?!
As one enters from Gate No. 5, one's attention is immediately caught by something unusual in the Pilkhan and Wild Date Palm trees - Roosting bats and lots of them!
The Wild Date Palms also boast of a couple of Baya weaver bird nests which one seldom spots elsewhere in the city. The Sandpaper tree is a beautiful specimen and only 1 of the two found in Delhi. An odoratissimus climber has you foxed that it's a tree - It's actually a woody climber. I believe it's called the Raat ki Rani locally, has yellow flowers which have a heady fragrance and if left in water, emanates an entire room. The cluster of Cabbage palms atop the hillock are something uncommon. Mexican Silk Cotton trees provide that splash of Indian pink intermittently while walking through the park.
ABOUT THE WALK PARTNER
Kavita Prakash, a graduate in Psychology from L.S.R.,has been a home-maker. She set up The Sausage Tree Nature Walks in 2013 with a simple premise - to share her newly acquired knowledge on trees with friends and colony residents. The basic information that she offered them, drew so much wonder and interest that she decided to make a dent in every neighbouring colony/park/forest/institution to bring residents closer to their immediate environment. She has conducted 40+ walks ever since which have been well received with repeat clientele.
