ABOUT THE WALK
The Walk will cover structures spanning the early 14th Century to the mid-14th Century. We will be focusing on the period of the reign of Ghyas ud Din Tughlaq and the early part of the reign of his son and successor, Mohammad Bin Tughlaq, before he shifted to his new city of Jahanpanah, opposite the present IIT campus. We start with Adilabad, the Fort Palace of Mohammad Bin Tughlaq, before visiting the awe-inspiring Fort City of Tughlaqabad, which was built by Ghyas ud Din Tughlaq. We will end the walk at his mausoleum, the site of the first two marble domes that were built in Delhi. We will discuss the start of the Tughlaq trade mark architecture of leaning walls and the use of water as an element of defense and sustenance, as well as an aesthetic component of landscaping and architecture. This period was also marked by the first large-scale use of sandstone and marble in the building of mausoleums.
