The St+art Mumbai 2017 Urban Art Festival Is Back!
The St+art India Foundation, which aims to make our streets more interactive through the medium of urban art festivals across India, is stoked to announce the second edition of the St+art Mumbai festival! This year, they bring to you some massive urban art interventions planned across the city. For instance, you might have noticed there's a gorgeous new painting of Mahatma Gandhi on the walls of Churchgate Station. Others would have heard the buzz around the Sassoon Dock Art Project, which was launched as part of the festival, where a dilapidated, not-in-use dock in Colaba was repurposed to become a stunning showcase of art - murals, installations, and is even a performance venue! The installations are on till December 30 - people can either just turn up and see the installations for free, or register for a guided tour via Insider. The latter is highly recommended, as it gives you an insight into the project, what went behind the installations and the inspirations and challenges the artists and organizers faced.
Take a look at some of the installations and artwork, below!
The Sassoon Dock Art Project: Transforming an Erstwhile Locked Space
The #SassoonDockArtProject is an experiential exhibition which will see the creation of site-specific installations, murals, audiovisual experiences, screenings, talks and curated tours in an unconventional space of one of the busiest docks of Mumbai, nestled at the tip of Colaba. The 142-year- old space of Sassoon Dock is a place forgotten in time, invisible even to most locals. Over the next 2 months, it will be transformed into a public art exhibition that will delve deeper into the various layers of the city, and the multilayered contexts of the dock. There will be special schedules across weekends in November where the exhibition will transform into a pop-up cultural hub for various creative communities to come together.
Tours, workshops & performances till the end of the year
Now's a fantastic time to check out the Dock's exhibits and see what went behind their creation. For this, there are some guided tours by experts. Plus, you will see plenty of workshops, and performance events at what is possibly one of the most unique 'live' venues in the country now! Check out the tours, workshops and other events below. About Sassoon Dock
Sassoon Dock is where the city of Mumbai developed itself. A city, which is slowly headed towards becoming the largest in the world, still has pockets living in the past. Sassoon Dock is one such space - a place forgotten in time, invisible even to most locals. Sassoon Dock, which has remained locked for Mumbaikars so far, will be unlocked and activated with artworks, performances and other active installations. With support from Asian Paints and associations with Mumbai Port Trust (MBPT), Singapore Tourism Board, Bonjour India, Institut Français and JSW Group amongst a host of other partnerships with cultural institutions and embassies, St+art Mumbai 2017 will bring to Sassoon Dock 30 Indian and international artists between November 11-December 30. The aim is to create a temporary cultural hub and a provide a stimulating experience, open to everyone while working alongside the vibrant community of locals and economies that are thriving in the area.
