About the Event
The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art presents the second edition of the KNMA Legacy Series: Murad Ali Khan: Narrative, Music and the Enduring Tradition of the Sarangi, at Triveni Kala Sangam Chamber Theatre on 31st January 2025, at 7:00 PM.
In this edition, we welcome the eminent sarangi artist Murad Ali Khan, a sixth generation musician and a part of the Moradabad gharana. His lineage can be traced back to the eighteenth century, and is a testament to the passionate rigour that is fundamental to the transfer of knowledge in the Indian arts.
One of the most prominent sarangi players of his generation, Murad Ali was trained by his grandfather, the late Ustad Siddique Ahmad Khan, and his father, the late Ustad Ghulam Sabir Khan. His art was further shaped by his mentors, Padmashri Shubha Mudgal and the late Ustad Rashid Khan. He is devoted to training future generations in the art of the sarangi, playing a crucial role in the enduring legacy of his family and ensuring the continuity of this rich yet precarious tradition.
In this performance, he will be joined by his disciples from the Saurang Parampara Ensemble. The performance will be accompanied by a riveting dialogue between Murad Ali and Aneesh Pradhan. A disciple of the illustrious tabla maestro Nikhil Ghosh, Aneesh Pradhan is a renowned tabla player, teacher, musicologist and writer.
About Legacy Series
The Legacy Series organised by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art honours genealogies of performers devoted to the intergenerational transfer of artistic disciplines. The hereditary passing down of techniques, compositions and nuances is an important way in which the performing arts traditions in India have persisted over centuries. The Legacy Series is a recognition of these indispensable efforts and the perseverance of lineages that have contributed to the knowledge of our diverse cultural heritage.
