About the Event
Join Trip 360 and Art Walks Mumbai as they take on the summer ennui with an exciting lineup of artists and works.
We’ll be walking and talking over 4 diverse spaces in Colaba: from a national gallery showing artists with Southern heritage to a museum show that celebrates the seminal work of an artist championing female empowerment; from a democratic exhibition space that has showcased everyone from master to student to younger, more experimental spaces; this walk is a slice of the Mumbai art scene.
We begin at the National Gallery of Modern Art,Mumbai, with ‘Dhvani se Sab aur Chinh’, curated by Adwaita Gadanayak and his team, which brings together artists from within the NGMA collection who through their birth or training draw inspiration from the Southern States to develop a unique idiom that helped shape modern and contemporary Indian art.
We then cross on over to the Jehangir Nicholson Art Foundation at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, for a piece of history: Rekha Rodwittiya’s seminal ‘Songs from the Blood of the Weary’ (1995), a series of 12 large paintings commemorating the United Nations, Geneva, shown here for the first time. Her ‘painted room’ “celebrates all aspects of womanhood and explores the many avatars that female empowerment takes”.
From there we head onto the oldest democratic art space in the city, the Jehangir Art Gallery, that even today holds its own as one of the top spaces to spot contemporary talent. Massive and labyrinthine, we’ll take a look at how the spaces have helped shape Indian art history.
We then take a pick of one of the younger galleries in the area to end the walk before heading to the nearest watering hole for drinks.
At Trip360, we get up to some serious fun including (but not limited to) cycling expeditions, trekking, diving tours and motorcycling trips. Don't miss out!
