About the Event
Join Graphic Designer, Illustrator and Founder Studio Kohl Mira Malhotra, Graphic Designer Aniruddh Mehta and Cartoonist, Author and Advertising Creative Director Cyrus Daruwala who will be in conversation with Journalist & Design Writer Bindu Nair. The panel will discuss various aspects and mediums of illustration, its history with Mumbai and how each creator in his/her own unique style has contributed to the ever-evolving visual aesthetic of the city and its people while retaining the medium’s ability to engage with the masses and tell stories in the most unique way!
This talk will be part of AVID’s Multipolis Mumbai Series that decodes the past while looking to the future and finding novel ways of engaging, interacting with and reenergizing the city that we love! The original nine-part series, which began in 2012, examined how Architecture, Music, Food, Theatre, Fashion, Environment, Literature, Innovation, and Film influenced and were influenced by the city. Our second iteration of this series, which began in 2017 attempts to renegotiate larger perspectives on the city, dig deeper and capture its essence and changing rhythms and nuances. In this second round we seek to plumb new depths and unearth more fascinating nuggets about our ever-surprising Mumbai! On our journey, we have explored how entities like businesses and brands, architects, historians and designers, artists and poets, women writers and female theatre stalwarts have influenced our city. We have also explored how art technology and gaming, wildlife activism, philanthropy and maritime culture, alternative museums and urban subcultures have all played a role in enriching Mumbai’s cultural fabric. We've also held workshops that looked more closely at iconic Mumbai architecture (namely Art Deco, Indo-Saracenic and Victorian Gothic).
Join us for an absorbing discussion that will take a closer look at how illustrators keep a pulse of the city and vibrantly capture its spirit!

Cyrus likes to stay in touch with creative people and trends, but is firmly against staying in touch with millennial abbreviations and lingo.

Bindu Nair has been a journalist for close to two decades, having started her career with The Pioneer in New Delhi in 2000. Since then, she has worked at companies like Times Now and UK’s Haymarket Media. From 2009, she started writing on design and visual communications, first for Haymarket Media’s advertising and marketing title Campaign India and then as editor of Kyoorius magazine. She later moved to Conde Nast as features editor for Architectural Digest India. Her last assignment was as editor of Beautiful Homes, an online design magazine that she launched for Asian Paints. During all this time, illustration has remained an abiding love, and the evolution of the Indian illustration community is something that she has studied with keen interest over the last eight years.
