About the Event
The plot of No Exit is set in a drawing room decorated in the style of the ordinary drawing room furniture that is meant to represent hell. A valet enters with a man called Viyom. Viyom is surprised at the room's appearance, noting that he expected more torture devices. The valet tells Viyom that he can summon the valet at the push of a button, but he is physically unable to leave the room. Then, the valet leaves, and Viyom begins to panic. He tries to summon the valet using the button, but the valet does not respond.
Some time later, the valet returns with a woman called Prayushi. She initially believes Viyom is her torturer, but Viyom assures her he is a regular person and doesn't want to hurt her. Viyom tries to communicate and get to know Prayushi, but Prayushi is standoffish and prefers to be left alone. After some time passes, the valet returns again with a woman called Rashi. She panics and believes that Viyom is someone she knows who has no face, and she is confused when Viyom looks up and reveals that he does have a face.
So, Three damned souls, VIYOM, PRAYUSHI and RASHI, are brought to the same room in Hell and locked inside by a mysterious valet. They had all expected torture devices to punish them for eternity, but instead, find a plain room Which is furnished.
It is a depiction of the afterlife in which three deceased characters are punished by being locked into a room together for eternity.
Sartre heavily features existentialism and self-deception throughout this play.
