About the Event
Cinematography is one of the most important aspects of film-making.
What is a good image? How do we translate what we see or imagine into cinematic visuals?
Join this workshop with National Award Winning Filmmakers Nandan Saxena & Kavita Bahl to learn the art of painting with light.
Facilitators
Nandan Saxena & Kavita Bahl are independent filmmakers and media-trainers with over 40 films to their credit, many of them feature-length. After their Masters in World Literature and a diploma in journalism, Kavita reported for the Indian Express and Nandan worked as a television journalist for seven years, in what they call their previous life.
Of these, two fruitful years spent in northeast India changed their lives. In 1996, they quit their jobs to follow their dreams.Over two decades into filmmaking, their films are poignant portraits of these times, often blurring the thin line between documentary and cinema. Besides other awards, they have been honoured with the prestigious National Film Award for their films thrice:
- ‘Cotton for my shroud’: Silver Lotus – Best Investigative Film / NFA–2011; [Headline Film: World Investigative Film Week @ London-2013] ,
- ‘Candles in the wind’: Special mention / NFA–2013; [World Premiere @ Thessaloniki-Greece],
- ‘I cannot give you my Forest’: Silver Lotus – Best Film on Environment / NFA–2014.
As media-trainers and knowledge-partners, they offer workshops to initiate inquisitive minds into filmmaking under the banner – Quark Workshops. They have offered more than 50 Workshops for organisations like the Films Division, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Educational institutions in India and London; and at major Film Festivals like International Film Festival of India (IFFI-Goa).
They have also taught Photography and Video-Production with the Department of Culture and Media Studies, Central University of Rajasthan.
Nandan is also an avid photographer. In 2009, he had a 30-day solo exhibition of his photographs at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.
