Pune 'Science on Tap' started as an idea to bring together scientists and the public in a casual environment. The aim is to get people talking about science while having a beer, and to help everyone realise that science and scientists are neither scary nor boring.

Topic: Representation matters: Women's presence vs. power

It's no secret that women's visible presence in the workplace, politics, and in society more generally has markedly increased in recent years. Indeed, it's an increasingly common topic of conversation; many wonder about the impact of women's increased presence across sectors on social, policy, and other outcomes. With a seat at the decision-making table, some would believe, women voices should factor into important decisions being made at said table.

When is that true, and when is it not? In other words, when does women's presence translate into women's power? What are effective strategies to ensure that women's presence, does, in fact, lead to their power - and not just their puppetry?

About the speaker: Alyssa Heinze, a Fulbright-Nehru Research Fellow based in Pune, uses evidence from behavioural experiments across the social sciences - based in politics, as well as corporate boardrooms and the workplace more broadly - as well as examples from her own work, to shed light on the answers to these questions.

Over the past 3 years, Alyssa has conducted Political Science research, with a focus on gender and behaviours, in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and rural Maharashtra more broadly. After completing her current project in Maharashtra, she will move to Delhi as a Fellow at The Harvard Kennedy School's policy thinktank - Evidence for Policy Design (EPoD).
