The Intermediate Level of the Roasting course builds upon the introductory concepts of the Foundation course. It is ideal for someone who has roasting and desires to gain a deeper understanding of the roast profile, how the profile relates to colour, the relationship between roast profile and sensory expression, and the impact of development time. Learners will further explore the physical and chemical changes as well as basic thermodynamics and heat transfer that occurs during the roast. Thereafter, there will be an introduction to sample roasting and a review of safety and maintenance protocols in the roasting plant. A written exam tests intermediate course knowledge while a practical exam assesses the learner’s ability to roast correctly and remove the coffee at the correct colour using a reference, while accurately completing the roast log form.

This course is accredited by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) – if you take the optional SCA Written and Practical Exam ($200) and pass, you will receive an SCA certificate in ‘Roasting, Intermediate Level’ and earn 10 points toward your SCA Coffee Skills Diploma. This is a two-day class, from 10 am to 6 pm on both days, including an hour-long lunch break. All attendees upon attending the first SCA course, must register online as a learner with SCA, to track their progress. There is no charge for this. We do this together at the start of course. All learners enjoy a cup of coffee on arrival, a three-course meal with a salad, main and dessert, as well as a coffee bean pin at the end of the course!

Please note: You must have completed the SCA ‘Roasting, Foundation Level’ to enrol in this course.
